Lowering springs – What's that?

You take your car out for a drive and enjoy the experience of driving it. You may wonder what more can be done to improve its performance. After all modern cars enjoy the benefits of more than a hundred years of research. They are made by large car companies famous for their product's quality.

Yet there is a thriving market for car aftermarket products which allow you to tweak the car and make its performance better. Often this improvement is done by making the car performance better suited to your needs.

One such product is lowering springs. These springs lower the center of gravity of your car and therefore make the ride more stable. But you ask how can they lower the center of gravity of the car. And if it is better to have a lower center of gravity why was it high in the first place?

A modern car is not mounted directly on the wheels that carry the car. It were the car passengers would experience as rough a ride as the wheels do. Which is not a smooth ride at all. Therefore the car is mounted on shock absorbers. In their simplest form car shock absorbers are springs. And when the car wheel goes over a small stone and lifts up the car does not lift up as much because the spring compresses and absorbs some of the deflection. Now for such a spring to be able to absorb a lot of deflection it has to be quite long. This length of the spring raises the body of the car and therefore the center of gravity of the car.

What lowering springs do is that being shorter they bring down the body of the car and so lower the center of gravity. So how are they able to absorb the deflection if they are shorter? Well they are made of special material that needs to deflect less and are a little “harder” than stock springs. Though quality lowering springs will still give you a comfortable ride even though they are harder than stock springs.

The lower center of gravity makes the car more stable and its response and handling is much improved as well. You will enjoy the low slung racing car look, especially if you have also added products such as racing body kits.

Lowering springs for stability and style

If you are passionate about driving and enjoy high performance driving then the handling and stability of the car will be important to you. What is a minor issue in calm street driving can become a critical factor when you are racing your car.

One great product for you to consider are lowering springs. Installing lowering springs lowers the centre of gravity of the vehicle. In common language it means that more of the weight of the vehicle is concentrated in parts nearer to the ground than in the upper ones. You would have noticed that tall trees are easily swayed in a storm, while the shorter ones are not so affected. A car is similarly affected by twists and turns while it is being driven. A lower centre of gravity gives it more stability. Driving is safer when the center of gravity of the vehicle is lower. The wheels also respond more quickly to the commands given by the steering wheel. Therefore driving becomes easier.

Lowering springs lower the center of gravity by about 4 to 6 centimeters. This may seem a small distance but it makes a big difference to the way your car handles and how it responds. Since the car is now closer to the road less air can pass between the road and the car and that means a lower lifting force on the car. This too makes the car hug the road better.

All the benefits stated above are important, but that is not all. The lowering springs enhance the looks of your car in a great way. The car looks slick and sleek. It will score over other cars by its smarter look. Combined with products such as racing body kits your car will look like a dream car.

You can also add other products along with lowering springs such as coilovers and camber kits to further improve the quality of the ride.

Installing lowering springs is an easy way to give your car a great look while improving its performance and making it safer to drive. Lowering springs need precision manufacturing so you should make sure you install lowering springs made by a very good manufacturer.

Lowering springs for better car response and handling

When you use your car, ideally you should have the same control over it as you have over parts of your body. It is said for a great tennis player the racquet is an extension of the player’s hand. The player can manipulate the racquet with the same speed and dexterity with which the player can control the hand.

Similarly if you want to have a confident and easy control of your car it should handle better and respond faster. Unlike our body parts which start to move as soon as we command them to do so the car parts take some time. This is because our command travels through the mechanics of the car till it reaches the concerned part which will then start to obey it.

For example if you, using the steering wheel, command the front wheels to turn left they do turn left but there is a small delay. This is not very perceptible in normal driving conditions but in car racing it is a very important consideration.

Lowering springs lower the suspension of your car. This reduces the height of its center of gravity and the car hugs the road better. It is easy to understand that the higher the center of gravity the less stable the car is. The center of gravity of a pile of books is high and they can be made to topple easily. But if just two books are lying one over the other, the center of gravity is low and the book on top want fall off easily. Similarly by lowering the center of gravity of your car you get a more stable ride. The response time also reduces since the upper and lower parts of the car come closer together. For example during cornering the car will not roll as much.

Lowering springs also give your car a great low slung look. This gives it a sporty race car like appeal. You would have seen the very low road hugging cars on TV racing car shows. You car will get a similar look with lowering springs. Combined with other look enhancing products such as racing body kits your car can get a stunning new look.
